Learn The eBay Jargon

Abbreviations
These tend to come up a lot in eBay item titles, and some are often specific to the category of item being sold. It's a good idea to understand what the most common ones mean as they can be quite useful for your own eBay listings if they are used properly. Some of the most popular are listed below:

  • bnib or BNIB - Brand new in box
  • mib or MIB - Mint in box
  • nr or NR - No Reserve
  • nwt or NWT - New with tags
  • nwot or NWOT - New without tags
  • ltd or LTD - Limited edition
  • nbw or NBW - Never been worn
  • oop or OOP - Out of print
  • vhtf or VHTF - Very hard to find

Buzzwords
Buzzwords on eBay tend to come in a couple of different categories. Either they will reassure the potential bidder by confirming the worth of an item, for example:

official, mint, authentic, genuine, antique

Or they are superlatives used simply to attract attention, for example:

super, superb, wonderful, fantastic, magnificent

We can also include some short phrases like "best ever" or "art nouveau" along with these buzzwords as they are used in exactly the same way. At any given time there will be some that are more fashionable than others as hot buzzwords, for instance the phrase "art deco" is especially popular at the time of writing (try an eBay search for "art deco" and see the variety of results for an example!).

These words or phrases can be useful to help draw in a potential buyer either from a search or to draw attention to your item on a page, but only use them if they are relevant. If you try to describe something as antique when it clearly isn't you simply won't get any bids.

The list goes on. I'm sure you can come up with plenty more to add to that lot. The point is that you are catching the eye of your potential buyer, and in some cases can reassure him/her that you are sincere about your item.
